Pasture

Our pastures are currently ryegrass dominant with a red and white clover base.

We plan to trial as many different cost effective ways to establish 10-12 different pasture species in one paddock to provide diversity for our animals. Some examples of the pasture species we will try are -

  • Fescues
  • Timothy
  • Prairie Grass
  • Brome Grass
  • Crested dogs tail
  • Yorkshire fog
  • Cocksfoot
  • Plantain
  • Chicory
  • Lotus
  • White clover
  • Red clover
  • Lucerne

Our farming practices now closely follow holistic management principles where we avoid exposing the soil to the sun. On those times that we do, we give plants the optimum recovery time, which encourages roots to go deeper. (We have found that set stocking with sheep in early spring really does weaken our root systems).
